Thanks

No excavation is possible without the cooperation, interest, and hard work of a good many people, and it is appropriate that they should receive some sort of recognition here.

The Rev. G. Walker and the Parochial Church Council assisted our efforts and showed great interest in every stage of the proceedings. Practical help and enthusiasm was provided by John Dawson of the architects Fennell and Baddiley, Dixon Dawson. Advice on the consolidation of the site was generously provided by Jim Crow of the Department of Archaeology at Newcastle University. Sandra Hooper produced our poster display material exhibited in the Parish Centre during the excavation, whilst Chester-le-Street district council not only very kindly loaned us a display case in which we could show some of our finds, but also assisted with the publicity of our open day. Assistance with the illustrations in this booklet was provided by Philip Wood.

A weather eye was kept on proceedings by Colm O'Brien (Newcastle University), Mary Lakin and John Pickin (Bowes Museum), and David Stocker (English Heritage), all of whom went out of their way to help, rather than hinder, the progress of the excavations.

Then there are the ladies of the Parish Centre, particularly the secretary, Mrs Doreen Yates, who suffered our muddy boots on too many occasions, but were nevertheless always most helpful.

Finally, there remain two acknowledgements, arguably the most important: first, to my supervisors and diggers, who braved with grim determination and good humour the sort of weather and ground conditions that would have made the first Romans in Britain long for Mediterranean shores; second, to the people of Chester-le-Street, who never failed to show an interest in what we were doing and succeeded in making us feel that it was all worthwhile.

Thank you to you all.

The excavation was carried out by the Archaeological Practice of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, on behalf of the Bowes Museum. Funding was generously provided by English Heritage.
