Looking south-west, over the roof of the Parish Centre, the car park lies on the site of the commanding officer's house (praetorium) which, along with the defences - the ditches lie under the surgery to the right - have been the subject of past excavations. The road running across the top portion of the photograph is almost exactly on the line of the via principalis, the west gate lying near the far end of the surgery.
