The Church

 [ The Church ]

Looking to the south-east, the church of St Mary and St Cuthbert is situated over, and on the same orientation as, the headquarters building (principia). It now houses a small museum, in the Anker House, which has some of the finds (including inscriptions) from Roman Chester-le-Street. It was to one of the predecessors of this building - possibly even the principia re-used - that St Cuthbert's body was brought to Concanceastre on its journey from Lindisfarne to Durham (the fact that the deceased saint stayed 112 years may imply that his corpse rather liked the old place).

The via principalis ran past the far side of the church.
