The two parts of the main trench excavated by John Rainbird can be seen in this view, looking north. As it happens, it was placed directly over the ditch of the primary fort. At the far end, the trench came within less than 5cm of finding the corner of the officer's quarters. The gutter blocks came from the nearer trench. In the left foreground is one of the rectangular trenches that may have derived from an undocumented archaeological excavation.
