Our machining paid off: we found the early ditch at the south end of the site, proving the early defences theory once and for all. Unfortunately, given the water table on the site, it rapidly became very moist (to say the least), so we had only minutes to snap the results and it was not safe to get into the trench and clean up the section. Ironically, the missing Rainbird trench we had been looking for for so long was sunk directly into the top of the ditch fill (causing the collapse behind the ranging pole).
