A series of large postholes containing stone packing supported the uprights
of the timber palisade of the primary fort at Chester-le-Street. The remains
lie very close to modern street level (Church Chare can be seen to the rear
through the fence).
Beneath the ranging pole on the centre right of the picture are all that remains of the bottom of the turf rampart. This was dated by a small piece of black-burnished ware found within it. The ditch is off the left of the picture. View looking north, scales marked in half-metre segments. [CONTENTS] |
