![[ The Early Defences Reconstructed ]](../images/recon1.jpg)
This reconstruction drawing gives some impression of how the defences of the first fort at Church Chare would have looked when in use during the second half of the 2nd century A.D. The view is towards the north-east and shows the ditch, turf rampart, and timber breastwork at the north-west corner of the primary fort. Roman forts of this type always had corner, gate, and interval towers to provide elevated observation and fighting platforms.
