In the area of the men's quarters of the barrack block (the
contubernia), there was a drain composed of upright stone slabs,
laid so as to form a V shape. The drain ran from east to west across the
area. The contubernia were made of timber, even though the officer's
quarters were made of stone (a rare, but not unknown, phenomenon in Roman
military construction). This drain appears to date to the period after the
demolition of the timber structure, when the stone building had a coninued
life of its own.
